Trip To Alaska Page 9
Day 11 Whitecourt, AB to Dawson Creek BC Saturday 15 April 2006
Sagitawah RV Campground to Northern Lights RV Campground 278 Miles
On the way to Dawson Creek
I made it! Mile Zero City. Can we call Dawson Creek a city?
Since picking up my Mum and her sister the weather has been nothing short of fantastic! Payback is wonderful when it happens this way. Each day's weather is better than the previous day and the ability to see forever really does exist!
The five onboard GPS units started arguing with each other on this leg and as the map shows it routed us north through Clairmont and them west on Highway 49 into Dawson Creek. I think my truck and the GPS units were talking to each other and this was the outcome. Those of us familiar with California Highway 49 probably know why the truck wanted to go on that route? :-) The truck will be looking for highway 395 next.
The top left picture below of the John Deere "green thing" was typical of the rush hour traffic seen during today's drive. They advertise that "Nothing runs like a Deere". Well let me tell you a thing or two about Deere's running on the main highway. Impressive as it was and many of you know that I admire great machinery and also I am sure the John Deere people are very proud of this "green thing" too but...
This thing is not a deer people and it doesn't run like one either. :-) However the driver was very polite and after trailing the green machine for a few miles I was finally able to pass him.
The right top picture started my blood pumping. As we get farther north the visible signs keep appearing that the adventure to Alaska is really on and we are getting ever closer to Fairbanks with each passing day.
We arrived in Dawson Creek around 3:00 pm and quickly realized that the sidewalks would be rolled up by 5:00 pm Saturday and with Easter Sunday being the next day we had better play tourist, like NOW!
So we did! :-)
